In a report today, HRW criticised the EU Executive Commission, which last month, said Croatia is ready to join the so-called Schengen area.
HRW said that the illegal and violent return of asylum seekers and migrants from Croatia should disqualify it from entry into the Schengen” area and that the actions of the Commission “submit the message that serious human rights abuses are not an obstacle to accession to Schengen”.
So far there was no immediate reaction from Croatia regarding the report. Croatian officials have repeatedly denied accusations of abuse by migrants and human rights groups.
