Egyptian security forces killed 83 Islamic group members

Egyptian security forces have killed 83 suspected members of Islamic groups in operations at central and northern Sinai last month, the military said.

The identity of those killed and their nationality has not been announced, Reuters reports.

The military said 61 people were suspected of the same crime and that 376 explosive equipment had exploded.

According to the armed forces, several hundred militants have been killed since 2018 in a major action against the Islamic State and similar extremist groups in the Sinai Peninsula.

A branch of the Islamic State in Egypt pledged loyalty to the new leaders appointed by the group after Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi's death.
