The coffin transporters are a missing ward in Germany, and the gaps are being filled by pensioners and students, funeral officials warn.
“Anyway, their absence has not yet led to the postponement of funerals”, said Christian Jaeger, director of the burial association in the German state of North Rhino-Westpholia.
In the past, as families lived nearby, it was common for friends or relatives to perform. Now, pensioners or students who want to earn more work as coffin carriers, he added.
“Ende, older carriers have their own problems,” says Michael Yours from the Dortmund-based Webber funeral company.
People are much heavier today, and along with flowers and a coffin, six carriers often have to climb 200 pounds [200 kg].
Funeral companies in Germany do not employ their carriers because it is not worth it financially. Moreover, the number of ashes has increased significantly to about 70 percent, the Federation of German Enterprises said.
In such cases the urna is usually carried by a priest or family member.
