The White House has given the green light to Turkish offensive in northern Syria, removing American forces from that area in a drastic change of foreign policy that would leave the Kurds completely vulnerable, Washington's long-term military partners.
Kurdish forces had led the campaign against the Islamic State [ ISIS] in the region, but this political change, following a call between Donald Trump and Rexhep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday, means Turkey will have Isis fighters in custody, the White House has said.
This has raised fears of a new war between Turkey and the Kurdish forces in Suri, now that the United States is leaving, writes The Guardian, Periscopi explains.
Trump defended his decision by saying Kurds “were paying huge money” to fight and that he was leaving the fight against Isis for now.
“We are 7 thousand miles away,” he wrote on Twitter, pledging to violate extremists if they came near America. ”
Kurdish forces, meanwhile, said that American partners had begun to withdraw from the border with Turkey already. /Periscope
