Eisenberg handed over the marble head of the mythic Pan figure to Culture Minister Darius Franceschini on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Carabinieri, as one of the four arms of the Italian Armed Forces, dedicated precisely to the return of cultural objects.
Special Carabinieri investigators discovered a marble head in a catalog from an auction in California in 2016 and announced their American counterparts.
American attaché Armando Astorga said that part of the statue was brought to the United States in the mid 2000s, as it was privately owned in Europe for years.
The investigation has yet to determine who the original “hydeti” was, the AP writes.
