German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in a telephone conversation Sunday with Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan, has told him to stop military operations immediately in northern Syria, a German government spokeswoman has said, Reuters reports.
“Kancerlar has demanded an immediate halt to the military operation”, the spokeswoman in the communiqué said, broadcasting Koha.net.
She said the call has been conducted at Erdogan's request.
“Bloomberg”, meanwhile, reports that Merkel has told Erdogan that, despite justified Turkish security interests, the Inquisition risks moving a large part of the local population, destabilizing the region and leading to the revival of Islamic State, German government spokeswoman Ulrik Demmer said in a statement.
