The amount of sleep we receive can have an impact on our weight or our sensitivity to serious problems such as heart disease or stroke.
Bed expert Neil Stanley, author of sleeping well, answers questions we all have about sleep.
How many hours do we have to sleep?
Neil explains that sleep is individual to all of us and the proper amount is variable from person to person. At least four hours of sleep and up to 11 hours can be considered normal, but taking only one hour less than we need can have a big impact.
Between seven and nine hours is the recommended amount for adults, and we actually need less sleep as we get older. Neil recommends that people judge the necessary amount from the way they feel every day.
If you find that you are often tired, you are not getting enough.
What sleep position is best?
Just as knowing the right amount of sleep to take, the best sleep position is personal to all of us. The most common in adults is the position of the fetus.
Neil says that sleep on your back is an ideal condition because it can reduce pressure on muscles and joints as long as you don't have sleep apps or snoring issues.
If it is the only way you can sleep, it is recommended that you sleep with your head against a pillow in front, so that you have room for breathing, which reduces pressure on your neck.
Pregnant women are recommended to sleep in their position to increase their blood flow.
