The failure of the Prespa Agreement and a breakup of Macedonia carries the risk of creating Greater Albania. The statement comes from Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who said Athens- Skopje serves Greece's interests.
Greece has no interest in a destabilisation at its northern borders. There is no interest in having an open front in a country that could be a vital space for our economy and businesses. There is no interest in the breakup of that country and the possibility of a “Albania Great” at our borders”
In an interview for local media, Tsipras said the Prespa Agreement would have the open road to the Greek Parliament and that it is his government's most important achievement after the country's economic crisis leaves.
When it is voted in the Skopje Parliament, our goal is to bring the Prespa Agreement to parliament immediately, of course within January”.
Asked about a possible rejection of the agreement by Panos Kamenos' “Independent Greek”, the prime minister confirmed that in that case he would seek parliament's support.
I believe that Mr. Kamenos will not choose to favor our cousin. But if you do, I will ask for a vote of confidence from parliament. If I don't get a majority of 151 deputies, we have a non-religious political problem, then I'll call early elections”.
The historic agreement between Athens and Skopje, signed in Prespa in June, is expected to be ratified within January 15th in the Macedonian Parliament.
