“We call on Kosovo and Serbia to return to a constructive dialogue”, Maas said after the conversation, adding that the road to the EU leads only through a real reconciliation.
The Federal Foreign Office in Germany writes that the relationship between Kosovo and Serbia has recently suffered obstacles.
For example, Serbia has rejected the neighbouring country's entry into Interpol, while Kosovo has imposed a 100 per cent import obligation on Serbian products.
We also talked about the fact that here in Germany we have concerns that we are working with punitive fees”, Maas stressed after meeting Pacolli.
Germany backs EU perspective
At the same time, Germany's foreign minister stressed support for EU ambitions for Kosovo and neighbouring states.
“We stay close to the EU perspective for Western Balkan countries”, Maas said.
However, support is subject to clear conditions. Among the most important preconditions for Kosovo are, for example, progress in fighting organised crime and corruption, they are said in their communiqué.
Germany wants reconciliation between Kosovo and Serbia.
From EU standards, Kosovo is like most other Western Balkan states, but on a long road towards membership. Germany thus offers active support. The federal government not only supports projects for greater economic growth and better infrastructure, but also gives particular attention to a process of sincere reconciliation in the region. For example, in co-operation with EU partners, Germany is promoting its youthful work for the Western Balkan region, which unites young people across borders/Periscopi
