Employment in Germany last year has reached a record level despite the slowdown in the national economy, as the number of employees increased by 1.3 percent to 44.8 million people, according to the latest official data.
The number of employees, according to the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis), increased to 562,000, thanks to which it reached the highest employment rate of the German union in 1991.
The growth of local population participation in the workforce and the flow of foreign workers neutralised the negative demographic effects, so that the number of employees in 2018 was the highest since Germany's reunification”, says Destatis's official website.
This is the 13th year in a row marking employment growth, as in 2017 there was a 1.4 percent increase.
The service sector has contributed greatly to last year's results because of employment in this sector increased by 1.2 percent, or 384,000.
The number of unemployed has continued to decline in 2018, dropping by eight percent.
