Germany returned to the Security Council of the United Nations as a non-permanent member after a six - year absence.
The first day of non-permanent members included a discussion of the council's agenda for January and the flag-building ceremony in New York.
Republika Dominican Republic Ambassador Jose Singer, whose country currently holds the rotating presidency, told reporters that the council will discuss conflicts in Somalia, Congo, Syria, Mali, Libya, Cyprus and the Central African Republic this month.
Germany will spend two years on the council, along with non-permanent members Indonesia, South Africa, Belgium and the Dominican Republic.
Germany was recently a member from 2011 to 2012, observes Atish.
The five permanent members of the UN Security Council are the United States, Russia, Great Britain, France and China.
