The possibility of an open military conflict and Russia's influence remain the main threats to the security of the Western Balkans for 2019, says a US Intelligence Community report on a 2019 global threat assessment.
According to this report, Russia will attempt to exploit ethnic tensions in the Balkans and high-level corruption to undermine the Euro-Atlantic path of the countries of the region.
The Western Balkans will almost certainly remain in danger of low-level violence and perhaps an open military conflict during 2019. Russia will seek to exploit ethnic tensions and high levels of corruption to prevent countries in this region from moving towards membership in the European Union and NATO”, the REL reported.
According to the report, the militant group Islamic State and the al-Qaeda terrorist organisation continue to be considered a global security risk.
