He was 61 years old. Quang had hosted US President Donald Trump during his first state visit to the communist country last year.
His latest public appearance was at a meeting Wednesday of the Vietnamese Communist Party Political Bureau and at a reception of a Chinese delegation.
Quang had not appeared in public for more than a month last year by raising speculation about his health.
He was elected president in April 2016.
