To preserve the planet's water sources, it is not necessary to take draconian measures, just to eat in a balanced way, using less meat and fat, according to a study published today in “Nature Subtainy”.
“Switching to a healthy diet is not only useful for human health, but also enables for saving a lot of water”, explains Davy Vanham, of the European Community General Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra (In Italy).
Davy Vanham and his colleagues have studied feeding and impacting water consumption in 43 786 municipalities in Great Britain, France and Germany.
The first note is that individuals consume plenty of sugar, oil, fat, red meat, milk, and cheese, but not enough vegetables and fruit.
According to researchers, this unbalanced feeding requires much water. According to estimates, this type of diet requires that one drink between 3.3 and 5.1 quarts [3.1 L] of water a day.
But if people are going to follow official health recommendations in terms of food like O BSH (World Health Organization), these water consumptions would drop by 19-35%.
Concretely, at least five fruits and vegetables should be eaten a day, three milk by - products, amicid content products at each meal, and legumes and cereals, proteins derived from animals one or two times a day, limit fats, sweet and salty products, and limit it to 500 grams a week of meat consumption except birds.
According to researchers, a balanced vegetarian diet would even allow water consumption to drop by 35.5%.
