Amb. Peter Hoekstra said today that the victims were visitors to the Netherlands and that he contacted families to inform them of the incident. Dutch police said the person who carried out the attack was an Afghan national who was shot by police and is being held in custody.
The Associated Press agency reported that the suspect has residence permits in Germany and that Amsterdam police are in contact with German authorities during the investigation process. Officials said that the motives behind the attack have not yet been known.
