This referendum results from several scandals involving meat quality or other products in recent years, reflecting consumer interest in how food is produced, the BBC writes.
The Swiss direct democracy system means that activists simply have to collect 100,000 firms to ensure a nationwide vote on a political issue.
The first proposal, called <x0hir food”, requires more government support for sustainable and friendly products to animals, as well as more detailed labels so that consumers know what they are consuming.
The second proposal, dubbed” food theft”, goes further, calling for much greater state support for local family farms, higher rates for import food and ban on foreign products that do not meet Swiss standards.
Switzerland is mostly urban society, but agriculture is an important part of its cultural identity, which, according to the initials, is threatened by imports of free food that undermines high Swiss standards, follows the Indexline.
Opposers, including the Swiss government, believe adopting these requirements will lead to increased bureaucracy and costs, and will bring the country into conflict with existing international trade agreements.
