Relations between Washington and the US will be strengthened with investment and trade, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday in a speech to representatives of American companies.
The two countries are at odds with issues involving Washington's policy in Syria, Ankara's quest for the extradition of the cleric, Fetullah Gulen, blamed for the failed coup and Washington's concerns about US citizens and embassy staff in Turkey.
American pastor Andrew's arrest and ban Brunson, who has lived in Turkey for more than two decades, deepened the rift and caused President Trump to impose sanctions on Turkey and double rates on trade, which affected a drastic decline of the Turkish lira.
In retaliation, Turkey doubled the tariffs for some US imports, including alcohol, cars and tobacco.
“I believe our strategic partnership with the United States will further strengthen with investments and trade despite all discounts and promotions,” said Erdogan, according to the text Reuters has seen.
The event for American businesses operating in Turkey has been closed to media and was not possible to confirm whether the speech was delivered as written.
Erdogan said Turkey will continue to take every step in order not to be harmed by trade measures and not compromise free market principles, according to this text.
