Turkey's president, Recep Tayip Erdogan, pointed his finger at the United States for the recent lira fluctuations, characterising the decline of the currency against the US dollar as “economic murder attempt”.
“We have faced a disgusting attack on the Turkish economy, as some negative decisions of the American administration for our country have been used as justification”, Erdogan said on Friday, in a speech to members of his Party for Development and Justice.
Lira has fallen to record levels in August, after Washington has imposed sanctions on several Turkish officials for holding an American pastor in prison on charges of terrorism.
The immediate recovery of the exchange rate in August 7th is evidence of an attempt to kill economic”, Erdogan said.
American pastor Andree Brunson is currently under house arrest in Turkey's Izmir city.
Erdogan also criticised Turkey's Central Bank, saying it is losing patience with high interest rates.
On Thursday, the Central Bank raised its basic rate from 17.75% to 24% an increase exceeding market expectations.
Economists say increased interest rate in Turkey is essential in the face of inflation of nearly 18% and loss of cheap value nearly 40% against the US dollar, only until this period of year
