Cancer will kill nearly 10 million people this year, experts say, warning that the global burden of disease is increasing despite better prevention and early diagnosis.
Some 18.1 million new cancer cases are expected to be recorded throughout 2018 and will result in about 9.6 million deaths, the International Cancer Research Agency reports.
The figure represents growth from 14.1 million new cancer cases and 8.2 million reported deaths in the agency's latest assessment six years ago.
In the latest report, the Agency says that an increased focus on prevention by encouraging people to exercise, quit smoking, and eat healthy foods has led to a decline in certain types of cancer in certain population groups, but, however, the overall number of new cases is moving forward to curb the disease.
These new figures stress that much remains to be done to address alarming growth in cancer at a global level. Prevention has a key role to play”, International Cancer Research Agency Director Christopher Wild said.
The World Health Organization has said earlier that it expects cancer to be the leading cause of death in the 21st century. /rel/
