Shoigu said the exercises -- codenamed Vostok 2018 -- will be held in Russia's central and eastern military circles and will include nearly 300,000 troops, more than 1,000 aircraft and all aircraft units.
“These will be the biggest exercises in Russia since 1981”, the Russian news agency Interfax said.
The announcement comes at a time when relations between Moscow and the West have been severely strained, due to the annexation of Russia's Ukrainian Crime Peninsula in 2014, its role in the wars in Syria and east of Ukraine, as well as its alleged involvement in the US and Europe elections.
