On April 27, 1963, Fidel Castro visited the Soviet Social Union for the first time and met Nikita Hrushov at his headquarters in the Kremlin. He sat down with the leader of the Soviet Union and was lighting a cigarette when the photographers started shooting pictures. When the photos were published, all attention was in Castro's left hand.
Cuba's leader, the man who orchestrated the Cuban revolution with Che Guevara and dictator Fulgencio Batista, held not one but two golden Rolex hours.
In various pictures, even in those during the years of the Revolution, Fidel Castro carried two Rolex clocks.
According to the analyzers, the two clock models were Daydate and Submarner, but nothing more, no one could say why he held two hours.
There have been some theories over the years, one crazier than the other.
The simplest suggests that he held two hours in order to have local hours of both countries, Havana and Moscow. But this theory seems to be dismissed since Castro was later seen holding a Master GMT Rolex- an hour that could show clocks in different areas.
The next theory seeks to show that Castro belonged to a belief called Santeria. According to this belief, members of Santeria had to wear a bracelet for protection. So some people think he kept watch to cover the bracelet.
But Castro was not someone who was afraid to say what he thought and was loyal to his principles, so it is unlikely that even this theory is true. While Castro himself was asked by two journalists about this part, he answered: For security, in case one stopped working”. An answer that sounds more like a joke, but this is the only official record where Castro explains why after this strange habit.
