Over four years, American and Chinese researchers have monitored the verbal skills and mathematics of some 20,000 people in China.
They believe the results are of global importance, as over 80% of the world's urban population breathes contaminated air.
According to the study, polluted air also increases the risk of degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's.
The World Health Organization has described the polluted air as invisible killers and has estimated that it causes some 7 million premature deaths a year worldwide.
