While Trump pledged to block those who traded with Iran from the American market, the EU escalated efforts to preserve the nuclear agreement with Iran, encouraging the bloc's countries' companies to ignore White House warnings.
Federica Moghrini, the EU's top representative for foreign policy, said Brussels would not allow the 2015 agreement with Tehran “to die”, as it urged Europeans to make their own investment decisions.
The EU, China and Russia still hold signatures of the comprehensive action plan (as the 2015 agreement is otherwise called), under which economic sanctions against Iran would be lifted in exchange for restrictions on the regime of hopefuls for nuclear weapons.
Trump did not hold to the deal since May, describing it as a terrible unilateral pact that should never have been signed”.
The clash risks destabilising transatlantic relations, just weeks after European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, and Trump himself engaged in the White House Rose garden that they would increase free trade between the EU and the US, as well as iron out recent disputes.
