Kofi Atta Annan, born in Ghana in 1938, is a Ghanaian diplomat who has been secretary - general of the United Nations organization since December 1996.
The mandate was renewed in 2002, meaning he was UN secretary general until December 2006. In 2001, Kofi Annan received the Nobel Peace Prize. Annan has been secretary-general during the Kosovo war, and war in Iraq. He has called the invasion of Iraq illegal.
During the second term, Annan has been charged with corruption after it became known that his son Kojo Annan had accepted money from a Swiss company in connection with the division of contracts in Iraq's “Food Oil” programme.
