President Donald Trump's National Security Adviser expressed concern that four countries might try to intervene in the upcoming American elections. In addition to Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea were mentioned, reports the Voice of America.
American intelligence agencies have accused Russia of trying to influence American voters during the 2016 presidential elections. They say the same could happen during this year's mesmandat elections.
Our focus today is to inform the American people that we recognize the existence of this threat. It's true. It's continuous. We are doing everything we can to have a legitimate election process in which the American people can trust”, Director for National Intelligence Dan Coats announced.
According to National Security Adviser John Bolton, along with Russia three other powers can interfere with this year's elections.
I can say for sure there are enough concerns for national security about the Chinese, Iranian and Korean intervention that we've taken preventative steps... For the 2018 elections, these are the four countries we care about the most”, Mr. Bolton said.
President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter on Saturday that the recipients focus solely on Russia.
Mr. Bolton said the United States would do anything to cope with foreign intervention.
“has been my priority to ensure that we are using all our capabilities to protect not only elections, but also a host of other systems in the United States, exposed to cyberwar operations in the government and private sector”, Mr. Bolton said.
Mr. Bolton said he would raise the question of election intervention when he meets with Russia's envoy this week in Geneva.
