This recent report on the water temperature has caused quite a stir. Various articles often recommend that people drink cold water because it helps to burn more calories.
But is it time to drop the ice boxes we keep in the refrigerator and invest in the electric book? And when we talk about good health and weight loss, does it matter whether we drink warm water or cold water?
We know that whenever we consume something that is different from our stable temperature of 37.16 degrees Celsius, our bodies have to work more”, said Cassie Vanderwall, clinical nutricist at the UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin.
Cold water forces the body to repair itself, but drinking cold water will not help you to lose weight as the articles have promised.
“Shansets are very minimal”, says Leslie Bonci, nuristist and owner of “Active Eating Advice”. If you drink a glass of cold water, you burn eight extra calories... and if you drink eight glasses, you'll burn 64 calories. Which means you don't burn a single bagel”.
A 2013 study found that those who drink very cold water have experienced a 30 - percent increase in metabolicism, said Lindsey Malone, food expert recorded in Cleveland Clinic. This means that the body burns as much as 100 extra calories a day if people drink half a liter of cold water.
You will no doubt experience weight loss from drinking colder water, but you must realize that weight is lost only by drinking water in general, both cold and warm”, she says.
Warm water can soothe the stomach of people who suffer from gastroinstinal diseases, says Bonz, but there is no evidence that heating water makes it easier to absorb the body.
Despite temperature, drinking water has a positive effect on overall health.
If you are not hydrated, your metabolism will slow”, Malone says.
Drinking water will not set metabolicism to the point of losing weight, says Vanderwall. However, she says, drinking water can lead to healthier habits.
Drinking water instead of soda means that humans consume less calories. And the same brain region controls both urine and thirst.
There's nothing wrong with drinking more fluids. However, if you are going to drink water, do not expect to undergo major changes in metabolicism”, Bonci said.
