United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has warned staff that the world organization is running out of budget.
He urged member states to pay what they meet as soon as possible, Euronews writes.
In a letter sent to member states, Guterres has stressed that since June 30th, the UN's main budget has a $1 139 million drop and that the United Nations had never had such a difficult situation with money at this early stage of the year.
A company like ours should not constantly be threatened by bankruptcy, but of course, the greatest pain goes to those who cannot serve or respond to their call for help because of the lack of funds”, Guterres wrote.
According to the UN 112 of the 193 member states so far have paid off their share. The United States, which is responsible for 22 percent of the budget, traditionally pays later because of the annual budget.
By July 2017, 116 countries had paid their share in contrast with 2016, where only 98 countries had paid. China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States . .
Under UN rules, unless a country pays for two years or is deeply indebted to the organisation, it could lose its right to vote at the General Assembly, unless it manages to prove that it does not have enough capacity to pay, writes Euronews
