Carnataka State Police chief (KSRP) told the BBC he was concerned about increasing the number of obez personnel in force.
Bhaskar Rao added he made the decision after more than 100 officers died over the past 18 months because of diet related diseases.
Officials will be provided with help to change their lifestyle and diet.
K The SRP, which has 14,000 employees, receives frequent calls to go to major events and also to control such situations as riots and violent cases.
Top KSRP officials are told to identify overweight police officers and put them in a routine of exercise to help them lose weight.
