The warning comes as Greek emergency services are struggling with flames in the largest disaster in recent years, as a result of fires in the capital Athens, which have claimed several dozen lives so far, writes Tch.
The Ivailovgrad Dam, on the Arda River, in the Rhodope Mountains in the east, will most likely be overloading the next few days due to rainfall expected to fall, the Bulgarian foreign ministry said. The Arda River flows eastward in Greece and joins the Maritsa River at the Greco-Turkish border.
Sofia said it expects massive growth of water levels in both rivers, especially in the vicinity of the Bulgarian town of Svilengrad, near the Turkish border.
Bulgarian authorities have declared a state of emergency in several municipalities after heavy rains. A person lost his life after being swept away by flood waters in the Bulgarian town of Tetten on Tuesday.
