A court in Ecuador ordered former President Rafael Correa's arrest Tuesday over his involvement in the kidnapping of a political opponent in 2012. Correa, who now lives in Belgium, has denied the accusations.
Judge Daniella Camacho said she has alarmed the interpolo in an effort to extract the 55-year-old extradition. Ex-Deputet Fernando Balda was kidnapped for a short time in Bogota, Colombia, where he fled during escalating tensions with Correan.
He accuses the then president, who led the Andes people between 2007 and 2017, the kidnapping. At the time, Balda faced charges concerning a failed coup against Correa, and was later sentenced to one year in prison for endangering state security.
On Tuesday, the judge said Correa had been convinced of an order to appear at a court in Quit to help with the investigation into allegations of kidnapping. The former president instead appeared at the Ecuadoran consulate in Brussels, and the judge said it was a violation of its orders.
The former president insists repeatedly that it has nothing to do with kidnapping. In a tweet a few days ago he said: They'll never try anything, because there's nothing to prove.
