Dr. Mark Hausknecht and the assailant were both on bicycles on the South Main Street, near the Texas Children's Pavilion for Women, shortly before 9am, Police Chief Executive Officer Troy Finner said at a news conference.
Hausknecht, 65, was traveling north when he passed the attacker going in the other direction, Finner said.
The attacker returned, fired two shots at Hausknecht and went away on his bicycle, Finner said.
Hausknecht was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead, Finner said.
Finner said investigators did not know whether the attack was deliberate, random or caused by street anger. He said some people testified to the shooting and the video could become available.
In a updated description, the suspect is said to be a white or hispanic man, about 30 years old, wearing a grey jacket hat, short khaki trousers, and riding a bicycle with light dyes.
