US Secretary of State Mike Pompeii said on Monday that talks between American and North Korean officials are going well. He briefed reporters in Singapore on the eve of the historic meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the United States is willing to take action to give North Korea “adequate security” after deregulation.
There's no change in politics, we're ready to take action that will give them enough security than disleariarization is not something that would end badly for them. Rather, it would lead to a brighter and better future for the people of North Korea. ”
Mr. Pompeo said American sanctions on the North would remain in force until the country has been deregulated. But if diplomacy does not move in the right direction, he said, sanctions “will increase”.
The complete, verifiable and irreversible cenucation of the Korean Peninsula is the only result that the United States will accept. Sanctions will remain until North Korea eliminates its weapons of mass destruction fully and verifiably. ”
He said that in this case verifying the results is of key importance:
The United States has been deceived before, there is no doubt about it. Many presidents have signed earlier on paper but have later ascertained that the Koreans or had not promised what we had thought, that they had given up their promises. We will create a very powerful system to ensure that we are able to verify these results”.
Mr. Pompeii rejected a New York Times report suggesting that the American team does not have the necessary technical expertise to dismantle the Korean weapons programme.
“For more than three months, an inter-institute working group of over 100 experts has gathered several times a week to address technical and logistical issues related to the dismantling of the North Korean weapons programme”, he said.
The Secretary of State did not mean whether President Trump would consider withdrawing American troops from the Korean Peninsula. / VoA/
