Kosovo's expectations of visa liberalisation this year are receiving the final blow. Some of the main EU countries have already made it clear that visa removal for citizens of the Republic of Kosovo is unlikely to happen this year, even if the European Commission comes up with positive recommendation.
The period following the spring of 2019 is cited as an option, but there are also those speaking of 2020 as more realistic opportunities.
Whatever the case, several different sources who have been speaking on condition of anonymity have said lifting visas for Kosovars should not be expected to happen this year, no matter what recommendation is expected to come from the European Commission.
The reasons seem to be many. Officially, the failure to meet the last condition for visa removal is cited: combating organised crime and corruption. Some of the European capitals do not see the required progress in fighting corruption, even though they praise Pristina for ratifying demarcation with Montenegro.
