The Regional Co-operation Council (RCC) has published a study on climate change in the Western Balkans, showing alarming increases in temperature across the territory, with an increased monitoring temperature of 1.2oC in the near future, destined to grow even further for 1.7-4.0C even more than 5.0oc by the end of the century, depending on global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions <x1.
In general, analysis of climate change in the region recognizes that human health, security and quality of life are very vulnerable to natural risks and loss related to sectoral weather, while identifying sectors that will experience the greatest impacts:
• Agriculture (reducing food quality, erosion, and degradation of land, etc. );
• Forestry (high risk of widespread forest degradation, extinction of current tacsons, etc.) and so on. );
• Water resources (drinking water shortages, etc).
• Human health (growing heat waves, intervention of new diseases transmitted by vectors, etc)
Furthermore, information on climate change in the Western Balkan region shows the “further intervention of the subtropical climate in the north, leaving the coastal and southern areas very hot and dry during the summer season, which is expected to have a longer length for a month or two, from the near future to the end of the”.

According to the RCC's public and business opinion poll, Balkan Barometer 2017, 73% of people in the region perceive climate change as a problem. In this direction, the growth trend registered in 2015 continues, with 77% of companies in the region saying they have taken measures or actions to reduce their harmful impact on the environment, while 21% agree they do nothing to ease their environmental risk.
The study sets out a series of recommendations to reduce the burden for a single Western Balkan economy in resolving climate change related issues, especially given the lack of human resources and other capacities, through growth and focus on regional co-operation.
As candidates and potential candidates for membership in the European Union (BE) all Western Balkan countries (BP) are motivated to respect the Paris Agreement and achieve EU20 and EU2030 goals in reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), as well as to increase efficiency and energy production from renewable sources. To that end, Western Balkan economies have identified priorities in adapting to climate change and easing their impacts and continue to work with the RCC to address climate change and environmental issues through the Regional Environment Work Group ( RWG env.
The study is part of RCC activities in implementing the 2020 growth strategy of Southeast Europe (SEE 2020) within the framework of RWG Env.
Regional Work Team Environment RCC ( RWG Env is an intergovernmental platform aimed at co-ordinating regional initiatives and projects in the field of environment and climate change. It works with the ministries of the line, representatives of various regional and international organisations, projects, environmental agencies, partner organisations from the region and the European Union. RWG Env co-ordinates activities related to three main regional projects addressing the correction of the transport infrastructure climate, the water-food-echosystem connection and biodiversity.
