Research has shown that girls make up 60 percent of the total number of children deprived of education.
The Taliban have occupied several areas in Afghanistan over the past few years, while the US government has supported efforts to fight rebellion.
The long-term financial crisis, further exacerbated by widespread corruption, made it more difficult for governments to expand access to education.
Many families suffer from poverty, while educating girls is prohibited in areas controlled by Taliban, the AP broadcasts.
