An Italian coast guard ship, Dattilo, the first of three ships carrying the group, withdrew to the port of Valencia at 06.20, carrying 274 people.
Aquarior arrived in Valencia a few hours later, entering the immediate port at 11: 00 a.m. and maintaining 106 immigrants and refugees.
A third Italian naval ship, Orione, will withdraw to port later Sunday. She carried 250 people.
The case of immigrants, who has dismissed deep divisions over migration within the EU, has seen French President Emmanuel Macron, accusing the Italian government of “cinism and irresponsibly” by refusing to have Sowari rescue ship thrown into one of the ports.
Their immediate fate was resolved only on Monday, when new Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the country would take them, saying it was incumbent on helping avoid “a humanitarian disaster”.
The gates for migrants were opened today, however, by Spain.
