An air force official in Kirtland who had disappeared 35 years ago was found alive and healthy by another name in U.S. California, reports Guardian.
A special investigator said this week that William Howard Hughes Jr was found in his house following an investigative operation that revealed he had used a false identity.
Hughes was involved in a classified planning and analysis of the Nato surveillance systems during the Cold War. He specialized in radar surveillance.
The captain, he was 33 years old and single by the time he disappeared.
Hughes was recently seen drawing more than $28,000 to Albiquerque in northern 1983, after returning two weeks from vacation in Europe.
The Special Investigations Office spokeswoman told Albiquerque Journal that there was no indication that Hughes was involved in spying on the Soviet Union, Periscopi broadcast.
Hughes had told authorities after his capture that he had been depressed about being in the Air Force and just wanted to leave. He had developed a false identity and had lived in California since then.
