As local media report Yiannis Boutaris, 75, was shot with bottles and other hardy items in the head and standing by a group of nationalists. The incident occurred during a memorial ceremony held in Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki.
The mayor, who is known for his anti-nationalist views, was attending a memorial ceremony for the killings of ethnic Greeks by Turks in World War I.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras condemned the attack on Boutaris, viewing the attackers as bandits.
Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas said the right-wing <x0-bands will face the consequences of their” actions.
