Ireland said it was in the referendum to abolish Article 8 of the Constitution, which so far prevented women from having an abortion, in addition to extraordinary cases.
According to polls conducted favourable votes would be 68% pro and 32% against. Official results are expected to emerge during Saturday.
The referendum comes as a result of a several-decade debate on abortion in Ireland and will mark the sixth time in this country voted on the issue.
The “Amendment of Eight”, considered a contractor, was approved after a 1983 referendum. He “maintains the right to live the unborn and, given the equal right to motherhood, guarantees in his articles to respect and, as long as it is feasible, to protect and justify this right”, thus implying that the life of the mother and the unborn is viewed as equivalent.
