Half of America's population feels lonely and adolescents are the most affected.
According to a new survey attended by 20,000 people, 50% of them feel lonely or ignored.
More than 1/4 think they have no one in their lives to understand them, and 43% think their relationships are not meaningful.
The study found that youths under the age of 22 feel much more isolated than the elderly, and the use of social rules does not affect their condition.
But findings are not entirely unexpected, they come amid increased diagnosiss of depression and anxiety in all age groups.
The results show a need for more mental and physical health care.
The survey showed that those who felt less lonely had better health.
But according to Cigna's survey, 1 out of 5 people report that they are rarely or never close to people (20%) or that they feel they have people to talk to (18%).
“We are seeing a lack of human connection, which ultimately leads to a lack of vitality, or a gap between mind and body,”- David M. Cordan, president and chief executive of Cigna.
But we have to change this trend. When the mind and body are treated as one, we see powerful results. ”
The most powerful medicine to loneliness is sleep, stay close to family, physical activity, and work too much.
