The UN meeting between the leaders of Greek and Macedonian diplomacy did not mark progress in resolving Macedonia's name issue, UN envoy for the issue Matthew announced today. Nimetz, referring to continuing dialogue in Brussels.
Welcoming two-day talks in New York, Matthew Nimetz said in a brief press interview that the” problems were well defined” and that” the two sides are aware of the importance of reaching a” agreement.
”
The two sides are determined to make every effort to reach an agreement and are working hard on the issue.
The two ministers will meet in Brussels to continue the dialogue.
Greek and Macedonian Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and Nikola Dimitrov have been holding a series of meetings in Matthew's presence for months Nimetz in an effort to end the dispute between the two states, which has been in place for more than two decades.
Greece rejects Macedonia's name as homonim of its northern province's name. It rejects Macedonia's membership in the European Union and NATO without that dispute resolved.
The negotiations are based on the possibility of Macedonia adopting a name containing this word, accompanied by a defining word such as New Macedonia”, or” North Macedonia”.
