The US Justice Department said it has seized an internet domain, controlled by a group of hackers linked to Russian military intelligence, which has planned a major cyber attack, likely in Ukraine.
American authorities said this domain would enable hackers to take control of computers and steal valuable information.
Earlier, Ukraine's Security Agency has warned of possible cyber attacks from Russia during major events, such as the final match of the Champions League in football, scheduled for 26 May in Kiev.
FBI Assistant Director Scott Smith said this American agency “has taken a critical step in minimising cyberattack”.
The FBI said the domain was created by a group of hackers who call themselves Fancy Bear.
This group is blamed for a series of attacks on several governments and sensitive links, such as energy networks, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the World Anti-Doping Agency.
