Data science has more to do with extracting information, analyzing possible data, finding models and secret relationships.
So said Professor James Abdey of the Statistics Department at London School of Economics (LSE), during a lecture on the subject “
He said that data science also has to do with solving problems of nature of various things like those in business or health sectors.
“Data science, a term that many of you may have heard, but you may not be very sure what that means. So let's focus on “sequence”. I think we can connect this to scientists. And what do good scientists do? Well, it's a story story story, revealing knowledge, communicating these knowledge to a wider audience. As Albert Einstein says “if you can't explain it, you don't understand it very well”. So it's not just doing the analysis. You're building your algorithms during your encryption, making numbers bits. This is important, but it is also important to communicate with those knowledge taken with them through key decision-makers”, Abdey said.
As for data analysis, Abdey said they could face different terms and definitions.
“Data shutter, data review science to draw conclusions. So, of course, testing data requires different statistical mathematical techniques, which are implemented in an adequate and appropriate way with some assumptions made along the way, but that's how it comes to these conclusions, which are made as a consequence. There's no point in discovering something if you sit in that knowledge and don't use it in any particular way”, he said.
Abdey said managers in different businesses and organisations are not those who create algorithms, but according to him, it is necessary to have knowledge of the techniques and mechanisms used during the process.
During this talk, Abdey also mentioned the term “Big date”, meaning “large data”, which according to him, is very difficult to compile a proper definition. According to him, the challenges in this field are volume, variety, speed, value, and futility.
