Official Podgorica today marks Independence Day. In the referendum held on May 21st 2006, more than 55.5 per cent of citizens have indicated Montenegro's independence.
Montenegro's independence was announced on June 3rd, while on June 28th of that year Montenegro became a 192th member of the United Nations, while on May 11, 2007, a member of the Council of Europe.
According to official results, Montenegrin independence has supported 230,661 citizens, or 55.5 per cent of the 86.3 per cent citizens who have rightly voted in the referendum, while 185,002 or 44.5 per cent of voters have voted for a common position with Serbia.
The referendum is preceded by negotiations between the blocs for independence and the joint state through Slovak diplomat and European Union mediator Miroslav Lajcak.
Montenegro's Assembly has previously adopted the Law for Referendum, which agreed to the European Union's recommendation.
In the case of Independence Day, May 21st and May 22nd are non-work days in Montenegro.
