Researchers found that it had a dramatic effect on hair molecules in the laboratory, stimulating them to grow.
The medicine contains a compound that targets a protein that acts as a braking in hair growth and plays a role in “plaque”, the study broadcast by Shqip points out. Project leader Dr Nathan Hawkshaw from Manchester University said it could “make a real difference for people suffering from loss of hair”.
Currently, only two drugs are available to treat hair loss (androgenetic activity):
-Minoxide, for men and women.
-Finasteride, only for men.
Neither is available in the NHS and both have side effects and are not always very effective, so patients often use hair transplant surgery. The research, published in PLOS Biology, is done in a laboratory, with samples containing hair letters from more than 40 male hair transplant patients.
And Dr. Hawkshaw told the BBC that a clinical trial would be necessary to see if the treatment was effective and secure for people.
A British dermatologists' spokesman told BBC: “this is a very interesting study. As researchers say, lost hair is a common disorder and can cause considerable damage to emotional health, including self - confidence. More research will have to be done before people with lost hair” can be used.
