Thousands of protesters against the abortion have protested today in Zagreb, Croatia.
The event has passed without incident, police have announced. According to authorities, about 10,000 people participated in the march called “March for Life” in Zagreb. Similar protests have been held in the city of Split and Rijeka.
In Split, Archbishop Marin Barisic called on hikers to protect their lives.
But in Rijeka there was also a counter-proposed, titled “March for Freedom”. The two sides of the protesters have clashed and police have arrested over 20 women activists who tried to stop the protest against abortion, Reuters broadcast.
Abortion is legal in Croatia until 10th week of pregnancy. The abortion law dates back to 1978, when Croatia was part of Yugoslavia.
Activists are demanding that this law be abolished. Last year, a Croatian court had decided to reject the request to abolish abortion.
Some 90 percent of Croatia's population are Catholic, and the Church plays an important role in society.
