Climate change is partly responsible for an extraordinary increase in the size of the Sahara Desert over the past hundred years. According to a new study, the world's largest desert has expanded by 10 percent since 1920.
Researchers from the University of Maryland studied the rainfall data to measure the border changes in the desert and found that the highest summer temperatures, along with dry winters, are increasing earth's total aridity. The expansion of the desert also causes trouble for people and ecosystems in Sahel, in the transition zone between desert and green land in Savannah in the south.
