In what may be a surprising turn of events -- the three Western allies who threatened Russia with attacks on Syria -- now want to follow the diplomatic path and convince Moscow to support their new UN draft.
The draft resolution, authorised by the US, Great Britain and France, is secured by the AFP, which reports that discussions on the text will begin Monday.
It is not clear when and whether the draft will be handed over to the UN Security Council to vote, the report reports, citing the Western “diplorates” to say that this time Western countries will do their best to negotiate it with Moscow, writes Panorama.
If it is true, it would be a surprising change in the pace of the western three, taking into account that on the eve of co-ordinated attacks on Syria's military and civilian facilities Saturday, the West accused Russia of participating in a suspected chemical attack in Douma on April 7th.
Just days ago, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley displayed no sign of compromise, since she called the Russian government a <x0-regim”, whose “s are covered in the blood of Syrian children”.
On Friday, it further fuelled the fire, saying it was “Russia that had not stopped defending the multiple use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime”.
Several successive resolutions for investigating the Douma incident, drafted by Russia on the one hand and the US on the other, have failed in the United Security Council
