The news has been confirmed for KTV by Government spokeswoman Donjeta Gashi. She has said that Gashi has surrendered his position for several days, but today he has finished the job.
Driton Gashi was asked to free his position weeks ago, following the scandal of the expulsion of 6 Turkish citizens from Kosovo.
But, compared to Interior Minister Flamur Sefaj, Gashi had not freed the position and consent to that effect had not even Kosovo President Hashim Thaci given it.
In his office, the president had said he did not support the prime minister's request without completing the investigation, and without seeing what has been AKI's responsibility for the action.
Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan had thanked Kosovo Intelligence for the action.
The appointment of the AKI director is made by the president in co-ordination with the prime minister of Kosovo, and he serves as security adviser to both state officials.
