Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatolah Ali Khamenei, a major ally of Bashar al-Assad, condemned Saturday's air strikes in Syria, describing the leaders of the three countries involved in the attack as criminals.
“I clearly state that the American president, French president and British prime minister are criminals and have committed a crime,” he said on Saturday, state agencies announced.
Tehran's Foreign Ministry also said in a statement that <x0-aggression is a flagrant violation of international law and disrespect of Syria's right to national sovereignty and territorial integrity”, Iranian media reported.
“Based on religious, legal and ethical rules, Iran opposes any use of chemical weapons, but at the same time rejects and strongly condemns rationale to invade an independent country”, the foreign ministry's statement said.
“There is no doubt that the US and its allies who are engaged in a military intervention in Syria without any justified documents and prior to any final report by the Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCË), and have thought themselves as police and global judges, are responsible for the regional and international consequences of adventure, and must be held responsible, “he said.
Iran, which has supported Assad since the beginning of the conflict, has given the Syrian government significant support on the ground, thanks to a combination of Hezbollah fighters, Rain volunteers from all over the Middle East and its Revolutionary Guard.
Khamene's top foreign policy adviser, Ali Akbar Velayati, met with Assad in Damascus before the air strikes, repeating Tehran's support, saying Iran will stay close to the Syrian government under no circumstances contrary to Western vengeance.
